Frequently Asked Questions:
Who will be attending RYC?
RYC was started as a ministry to the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) Presbytery of the South, but already extends to OPC youth outside of our Presbytery, youth from other churches (and other denominations) and those that may not currently have a church home. RYC is for students entering 6th grade through those that have just completed 12th grade.
Can I invite friends to RYC?
“Absolutely! We encourage you to invite your friends to join us for an amazing week at RYC!"
How many counselors will be there?
The number of counselors will be determined at the close of registration and will be based on the number of campers enrolled. We anticipate there will be a minimum of one counselor for every ten students at RYC. There will be additional staff involved with maintaining and running the camp onsite as well. Total staff (counselors and other staff) is expected to be about one for every five students.
Can I bring my mobile device/music?
Some church counselors will permit you to bring these items for the trip to camp; however, no electronic devices are allowed to be used at RYC. It is strongly recommended that you leave these items at home during the week. Please note that these items, if brought to RYC, will be held by counselors or staff during the week and returned upon the conclusion of the week, so that they will not serve as distractions during this time. Cameras are allowed, but mobile devices that contain cameras will not be allowed.
Can I call my family and friends during RYC?
RYC is designed to allow a concentrated time for fellowship and learning, apart from your normal routine. As such, calls to friends and family during the week are strongly discouraged, excepting emergencies. Any campers or parents seeking exception to this should contact us at [email protected] to make special arrangements, if necessary. Emergency contact information will be provided to parents/guardians in the event that they need to reach you.
What are the differences for middle school and high school students attending RYC? Are they going to be together for all activities and lessons? We believe that there is a great deal that all students can learn from each other in any of these grades. There are benefits to having group activities with the entire range of ages. Most activities will be camp-wide, including all students attending RYC. Meals, games, and the main sessions will be together. We are specifically gearing these times to reach the entire range of students attending, challenging them while making the teaching age-appropriate.
We do recognize some differences in the ages involved. As such, there may be smaller sessions that are divided by age, gender, or by church in order to allow the speaker(s) to concentrate on particular topics. Most activities and sessions will be camp-wide, though there will be some exceptions, particularly based on age/grade.
How will the campers be arranged in cabins?
Certainly male and female students will stay in separate cabins. Students from a church may be housed with the other students from their church and/or with other churches. Cabins will typically be broken out by gender, then by age/grade. In some cabins, there are multiple rooms where students will sleep. It will be up to the RYC staff to determine the breakout among cabin rooms, if necessary, and RYC staff will make all final judgments on housing arrangements.
Do the cabins have their own bathrooms? Air Conditioning?
All of the cabins in use are air conditioned. Most, if not all, cabins will also have bathrooms in the cabins. The actual number of students may require some housing in cabins that do not have bathrooms inside the cabin. Additional bathrooms are available in close walking distance from each cabin if needed.
How is the price determined for RYC?
RYC seeks to be financially responsible for our endeavors and understand our true costs. RYC is operated on a small budget, with most staff serving as volunteers or paid by the churches supplying that staff. We thoroughly and prayerfully consider our budget each year to be good and faithful stewards of what the Lord has put before us, seeking to keep costs low to allow more students to attend regularly.
I don't live in the area. Is there a way I can carpool or work out travel arrangements with someone?
Travel costs are not included in the cost of RYC, since there is such a wide variety of situations and a large geographic footprint of students attending. However, to aid in any way possible, we would be happy to help facilitate travel with people and churches, by linking people up with those nearby that may be making a similar trip. We have also had students fly into Orlando and travel with us to the camp site. If you are interested in carpooling, flying or other special arrangements, please contact us as soon as possible with your location and number of students/staff involved at [email protected] .
